Weirton is a city of many proud heritages and cultures with traditional customs to honor and new traditions to begin.
On Saturday, November 18, 2017, Mayor Harold E. Miller will host the second annual lighting of the Weirton Community Christmas Tree, the revival of a decades old ceremony. The Weirton Light Up Night®, to take place at the intersection of Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, will begin at 6:00 p.m. with the welcome by Mayor Miller and the unveiling of the Success in Unity Ornament. Reverend Father Dennis R. Schuelkens will give a blessing prior to the official lighting of the tree, and a special fireworks display will take place.
Iannetti’s Garden Center has donated the Community Christmas Tree once again, which is dedicated to the memory of Nick Iannetti this year. ArcelorMittal continues to graciously allow the use of their piece of property at this intersection corner
The evening will also mark the occasion of something new – a collectible Christmas tree ornament honoring the ancestry of those who created this city called Weirton 70 years ago this year. “Weirton was incorporated 70 years ago, a town made up of families from all over the world who made a hometown here we are all very proud of,” Mayor Miller said. “The ornament, with its ring of flags, embodies the spirit that built Weirton, which is ‘Success in Unity.’”
The first Success in Unity Christmas Tree Ornament is $10. The first delivery of the ornaments will be available for pick-up at the Light Up Night event on Saturday, November 18, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. Additional orders will also be taken at the event.
Deadline to order ornaments for the Light Up Night delivery is Wednesday, November 15, 2017.
