Our community is deeply rooted in the steel industry. Friends, family, and neighbors all depend on the Weirton WV Tin Mill for their livelihoods. The survival of this mill isn't just a matter of jobs; it's about preserving our way of life and ensuring national security.
Foreign countries are illegally dumping steel into our markets at prices so low that domestic producers cannot compete. This practice not only threatens the existence of mills like ours but also endangers our national security by making us reliant on foreign sources for essential materials. If we were to go to war or face a crisis, we would need mills like ours to produce for our country.
According to the Economic Policy Institute, 64,000 U.S steel jobs were lost between January 2000 and September 2016 due to increased imports (Economic Policy Institute). We must act now before more jobs are lost.
We call upon policymakers to impose tariffs on countries illegally dumping steel into American markets. By doing so, we can protect domestic industries from unfair competition and safeguard American jobs.
