Weirton Area Port Authority

Upon application by a local governmental entity, groups of local governmental entities, or joint venture of local government entity or entities and private industry, the West Virginia Public Port Authority may grant authority for the creation of a local inland port authority district. A local port authority district provided for has the authority to establish a local board of directors, and has powers only as provided for the state board of directors. No local port authorities powers or duties can supersede the powers of the state authority.

The Weirton Port Authority established a local board of directors by ordinance on January 10, 2000. The Mayor of the City of Weirton appoints a five member Board of Directors to operate the local Port Authority Board with Council’s approval. Board members shall be a two (2) year staggered term and shall have all the powers and duties provided the same under the West Virginia State Code Chapter 17-16B-8(b).
