Public Works & Utilities

The Public Works and Utilities Departments have a wide range of responsibilities, including water and wastewater treatment, solid waste collection, conservation programs, and the maintenance of the City streets, parks, buildings and vehicles.
 
The Public Works customer service staff normally handles calls on weekdays from 7:00 AM until 3:00 PM.  During severe weather such as snow storms, crews are on duty around-the-clock.  Call (304) 797-8543 for pothole repair and other requests for service.
 
Call (304) 797-8550 to report water leaks, for water meter installation and other requests for service.
 
Call (304) 797-8550 for sewer backups.
 
Call (304) 797-8540 to report grease spills, pothole repair, dead animal collection and for other services including curbside collection of garbage, recylable materials, yard waste and leaves.
 
The Operations Center for Public Works and the Utilities Garage is located at 100 Tell Street. The building is not open to the public and all contact should be made by telephone.
 
The staff offers tours for school groups and people of all ages between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM on weekdays. Those scheduling tours should try to call a couple of weeks in advance. The number to call for tours is (304) 797-8543.

Find out information regarding the City’s Curbside Recycling Program, Garbage pick-up, and other areas of service that are handled by the Weirton Public Works Department.
The Public Works Department has the following four major areas of responsibility and has an established division in each of the areas:

Electrical
Primary responsibility is to maintain the city’s 29 traffic lights, two flashing signals, and six school crossing lights.

Garage
Services and repairs vehicles and equipment from the following departments: Police, Fire, Street, Sanitation, Weirton Transit, Park Board, Inspections, and Social Services.
The garage is also responsible for providing fuel to approximately 200 vehicles and pieces of equipment. The most mission critical users of this service are the Police, Fire, Ambulance, Water, and Sanitary Sewer Departments.
